Play (2021) on osa Veiled Masculinity -sarjaa, jossa maskuliinisuutta tarkastellaan voiman, roolin ja esittämisen kautta.
Teoksessa hahmo seisoo suoraan katsojaa kohti. Huntu peittää kasvot ja kehon, mutta katse lävistää kankaan. Henkilö näyttää kieltä hunnun takaa – ele on yhtä aikaa leikkisä ja uhmakas. Kevyt, lähes lapsellinen provokaatio törmää kuvan vakavuuteen.
Huntu toimii samanaikaisesti naamiona ja verhona: se suojaa, paljastaa ja vääristää. Mustavalkoinen ilmaisu tiivistää tunnelman. Valon ja varjon kontrasti korostaa katsetta ja kankaan tekstuuria, tehden kuvasta sekä graafisen että intensiivisen. Leikin ele muuttuu joksikin muuksi – rooliksi, suojaksi, performanssiksi.
Nimi Play viittaa sekä leikkiin että näyttelemiseen. Teos kysyy, missä määrin maskuliinisuus on opittu performanssi ja missä määrin spontaani ele. Kielen näyttämisen kevyt uhma ja katseen intensiteetti muodostavat jännitteen, joka jää leijumaan kuvaan.

Play (2021) is part of the Veiled Masculinity series, which explores masculinity through strength, role, and performance.
In the work, the figure faces the viewer directly. A veil covers the face and body, yet the gaze pierces through the fabric. The person sticks out their tongue from behind the veil—an equally playful and defiant gesture. A light, almost childlike provocation collides with the seriousness of the image.
The veil functions simultaneously as mask and curtain: it protects, reveals, and distorts. The black-and-white palette intensifies the atmosphere. The contrast of light and shadow emphasizes the gaze and the texture of the fabric, making the image both graphic and intense. The gesture of play shifts into something else—role, protection, performance.
The title Play refers both to playfulness and to performance. The work asks to what extent masculinity is a learned performance and to what extent a spontaneous gesture. The light defiance of the tongue and the intensity of the gaze create a tension that lingers within the image.
Prints are produced on Galerie Art Silk paper. All prints are numbered and hand-signed and include a certificate of authenticity. Delivered unframed.
